Extant since 2003, The Idealist has really came into its own over the past five years as Joachim Nordwall’s most prominent project. It’s proved the iDEAL place for the Swedish noise wrangler to express his love of dub principles and hypnotic sensuality without losing sight of his ascetic Nordic fundamentals, and on this new one he does it in the deadliest formation of grit, subs and psychedelic spatial shenanigans.
Leading off with a cut of rumbling dub techno ‘Statement’, Extended Player runs like a gritty mediation session thru 9 mins of mantric voice and distended bass to ‘Inhale-Exhale’, before pushing into a space somewhere between Ilpo Väisänen’s Kangaroo cuts and Wolf Eyes’ mind-smelting trip metal on ‘Mystic’, before fermenting the synths in a way that recalls Connor Camburn works in ’The Activist’, and returning to dub techno from a concrète noise angle on the signature statement ‘The Idealist’.
